VDNH launches New Year's tree shows at the City Farm

21 december 2020

VDNH has launched Polar Express outdoor New Year's tree shows at the City Farm. This winter, VDNH has prepared fun outdoor activities for children and their parents: snow relay races, ski runs, Antarctic curling and meetings with a polar explorer and Father Frost. All activities are carried out in compliance with the safety measures put in place by the Federal Consumer Supervision Service.

VDNH's 2020/21 winter season is devoted to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian explorers Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. In December and January, the City Farm visitors will embark on an expedition to the South Pole to learn a lot of new and interesting things about the sixth continent and bring a real holiday to the Antarctic station.

To meet with Father Frost and receive New Year's greetings from him, the participants of the New Year's tree shows will have to attend the Polar Explorer School, where they will learn how to make ski routes, make crossings on floating ice and play Antarctic curling, and will compete in relay races that will test their speed, agility and accuracy. Children can also take part in quizzes to check how well they know the geography, history and fauna of Antarctica.

Young travellers will meet a polar explorer, who will tell them about the discovery of the South Pole 200 years ago. Children will see a real open-air museum dedicated to the life and scientific research in permafrost conditions and featuring a camping tent, old equipment and navigational instruments, antique skis and household items.

The Polar Express New Year's tree shows are held in compliance with disease-prevention measures. Visitors are asked to practice social distancing and wear masks and gloves indoors. Tickets can only be purchased online on the City Farm website. The number of seats available is limited to 60.

On 27 November, the country's Main Exhibition launched the 2020/21 winter season called Antarctic Winter at VDNH. The skating rinks on the Main Alley and in Ostankino Park operate in compliance with the safety measures set by Federal Consumer Supervision Service. The Square of Industry hosts the installation of photographs Discovering Antarctica Together, which is dedicated to the harsh beauty and mysterious nature of the South Pole. Anyone can also take part in the Exhibition's online programme.
