VDNH subscribers pick names for newborn baby goats and lamb at City Farm

12 march 2021

VDNH has tallied up the popular vote on the choice of names for two baby goats and a lamb newly born at the City Farm Family Learning Centre. The baby goats have been named Pugovka and Martik, and the baby sheep is Polly.

The kids and the eanling were born at City Farm one day apart a month ago. The babies have since grown noticeably stronger and are almost big enough to eat grownup food. The little boy and girl born to the goat family of Ivan and Knopka are still kept in a separate room with a special care system, but they sleep much less now and they play a lot. They are getting collar-trained. Sometimes, they take them out to the cattle barn to meet the other inhabitants. Unlike her goat peers, the girl lamb has been around the other animals since birth. She is still very much attached to her mum, Nastya the sheep, but she goes out for walks more eagerly and starts making friends with City Farm guests.

The name vote was held in three steps. At first, Instagram users left their suggestions under a designated post on VDNH page. More than a hundred name suggestions were offered for each newborn. Some name ideas were inspired by the season and the weather, like Martik, Marta, Vesna or Snezhinka. Many names were inspired by the 60th anniversary of the pioneering space flight: Gagarin, Raketa, Zvezdochka and so on. Different countries and parts of the world were also suggested for names: Japan, Madagaskar, Altai etc. As always, food-themed names could not be avoided: Karamelka, Shokoladka, Morkovka, Sakharok, Iriska, Pryanik.

The City Farm team short-listed four names per baby animal. Then came the semifinals and the finals, which ran in the History section for two days and garnered over three thousand votes. As a result of a close contest, the names Pugovka and Martik were selected for the baby goats, and the name Polly for the lamb. The users who were first to suggest these names will each receive a certificate for three to visit City Farm free of charge.

The newborns, as well as the raccoons, donkeys, alpaca, rabbits, zebu cows, goats and other City Farm inhabitants, can be met from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. every weekday except Monday, or 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
