Living Slide Shows: Family entertainment at VDNH

31 march 2021

Living Slide Shows is a series of theatre plays to be enjoyed by whole families, offered by Russia's No. 1 Exhibition at the Worker and Kolkhoz Woman Pavilion in April. Subscribers of project Knowledge. VDNH are in line for entertaining interactive adaptations of their favourite children's books, performed by actors of the Maksim Gorky Academic Art Theatre of Moscow. Attendance is free by prior registration.

At 12:30 p.m. on 4 April, the series will open with the American classic the whole world knows and loves, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, which is 145 years old this year. Who is this boy who lived in a regular backwater small town in Missouri many decades ago? Was he much the same as boys his age in small towns across Russia in our time? What do these boys have in common? What are the vicissitudes of boyhood that befall them all? The new literary play by Alisa Grebenshchikova attempts to answer these and other questions.

Watching this show, both children and adults will be inspired to reflect on Tom's recipes for adventurous fun and decide whether they suit them. They will also learn from Tom how not to despair when it seems that everyone is against you. The backdrop screen portrays the world of old America, painted for the show by artist Ekaterina Belyavskaya. Looking as organic on-stage as figures on the backdrop screen, Tom, Aunt Polly and Becky Thatcher are played very convincingly by actors of the Maksim Gorky Academic Art Theatre Alisa Grebenshchikova and Evgeny Kananykhin.

Admission at the show is free by prior registration, which can be obtained at the project Knowledge. VDNH website. Due to the ongoing anti-coronavirus restrictions, the available seating is limited to 50% of room capacity. Visitors are required to wear face masks and gloves and maintain social distancing.

The second play of the Living Slide Shows series will be dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the first Winnie-the-Pooh book by the English author Alan Milne. Stay tuned in for this and next events of the series coming up on project Knowledge. VDNH by following the news on the website.
