Timeless Classics and the Magic of the East: the Greenhouse of VDNH's Pavilion No. 14 Invites Everyone to the Summer Season Concerts

17 may 2021

The summer season has begun in the greenhouse of VDNH's historical Pavilion No. 14 Republic of Azerbaijan. The programme for the coming week includes three themed concerts that will appeal to fans of different musical styles.

At 8:00 p.m. on 21 May, pianist Riad Mammadov will give a concert titled Songs of Absheron. The musician will perform his own adaptations of Azerbaijani and Persian folk songs. The performance of mugham (a genre of Azerbaijani music) in the form of a suite, a set of contrasting music pieces, will be the highlight of the evening. In 2008, this aspect of Azerbaijani culture was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. This complex art combines not only musical but also philosophical motives. Mugham lay at the heart of Azerbaijani music of the past century.

In addition to Riad Mammadov, the concert will also feature Pyotr Ivshin (drums), Mikhail Smirnov (percussion), Gorkhmaz Akhundov (tar) and Alexander Lupachik (double bass, bass guitar).

At 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, 22 May, the Melodion quartet will perform music united by the theme of the seasons under the direction of Natalia Tupikova-Moroz. The ensemble will play the famous Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi as well as compositions by the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla from the cycle The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. The quartet is known for its special distinctive style, sincerity and musical synergy. Together with the musicians, the audience will experience the whole range of feelings and emotions that the great composers wanted to convey.

On 23 May, the concert week will conclude with a performance by the Simple Music Ensemble chamber music studio. At 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, the band will perform compositions from the cult drama series The Young Pope by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino. The TV series, starring Jude Law as Pope Pius XIII, aired at the end of 2016 and was a resounding success around the world, even surpassing Game of Thrones in terms of ratings in Italy. The Simple Music Ensemble's concert will feature pieces by composer Lele Marchitelli, post-rock, electronics, chorales, contemporary religious music and much more.

The concerts are organised in accordance with social distancing requirements while seated. The hall has limited capacity to 50% due to health-related restrictions. All visitors must wear masks and gloves.
