On 11 August 2017 the international festival "Gardens and People" got underway in the open area in front of Pavilion No. 75. This is the second time VDNH has hosted the event. Every year, it attracts more than 80,000 landscape design and gardening professionals and amateurs. This time, the theme of the competition is "Contrasts in the Garden".
During the 17-day festival, visitors to VDNH will see unique gardens designed by the best landscape architects from around the world, attend lectures at the Green Lecture Hall, and take part in professional seminars, workshops and the festival program itself.
This year, more than 30 participants presented their gardens and artistic creations to be judged by the jury and the public. The project "Garden Edges" won the Grand Prize for its melding of classic landscape architecture with the simplicity of natural communities. "Modern Jurassic Garden" was deemed the winner in the Large Gardens category. The designers of this project recreated and harmoniously combined two completely different worlds, an ancient forest and a birch grove. An unusual rest area made to look like a prehistoric lizard's skeleton has become the exposition's focus of attention. Also among this year's winners are the projects "Secret", "Memory of the Sky" and the objet d'art "I Died Under Rzhev..."
We are happy to host such a colorful and large-scale event of the green industry at VDNH EXPO. "We wish all the participants and the organisers a large number of visitors, as well as professional and friendly contacts and fruitful work," says the First Deputy General Director of VDNH, Dmitry Mikhailov.
Irina Savvateeva, President of the Festival "Gardens and People", remarks:
"Our main goal is to make the festival a platform that brings together the entire industry, which will allow landscape art to progress and landscape artists, nurseries, and all other representatives of our line of work to develop. And it seems to me that today, this goal has been achieved."
The international jury of the garden competition was headed by the famous French landscape architect, Michel Péna. On the first day of the festival, the designer of the concept for the VDNH's Landscape Park conducted a master class for children called "Games with Contrasts". The young designers learned where to find interesting ideas and how to work with natural materials and create objects of landscape architecture.
The festival also has a rich lecture program. There will be numerous master classes from leading industry professionals, as well as landscaping lessons and themed tours. The youngest visitors will have fun taking part in the Pimp My Ride project, in which the young designers will release their creative potential and put their wildest ideas into practice by creating small decorative gardens.
In addition, visitors can view an unusual photo project called "Flowers as People", as well as musical and theater performances that will create a pleasant atmosphere for this colorful and memorable festival.
"Gardens and People", the Fourth International Festival of Landscape Art, Nurseries and Gardening, runs until 27 August 2017. As per tradition, the event is the partner of the largest professional exhibition of the green industry, "Tsvety/Flowers 2017".
