A winter fairytale at VDNH: the magical landscapes of the Exhibition in winter

7 january 2021

For New Year's Eve and Christmas, everyone's favourite holidays, the main exhibition of the country transforms into a winter wonderland where fairytales come to life. As if with a wave of a magic wand, VDNH is enveloped in a blanket of snow and its historic alleys and pavilions get lit up with thousands of colourful lights.

This Christmas Eve VDNH is presenting a series of photos of VDNH in winter to help our visitors experience the holiday atmosphere of the Exhibition at home. We invite you on a virtual tour to the most impressive locations at VDNH: walk along the shining fairytale portal on the Central Alley, make a wish by the clock titled Christmas Time and meet some magical hares.

Holiday installations

Christmas baubles in front of the Main Entrance Arch, the Alley of Magic and the clock ‘Christmas Timeʼ on the Central Alley, the fascinating ‘Firefly Fieldʼ of 23,000 flying dots of light at the Square of Industry; miracles await in every corner of the Exhibition.

The biggest ice rink in Moscow

The ice rink features a long snow-white bridge, Christmas trees and winter artworks. One of them is the big, glowing figure ‘2021ʼ to celebrate the new year. ‘The Field of Lightʼ occupies the centre of the ice rink: it consists of thousands of baubles on stands. They sway in the wind and change colours, creating the impression of a living carpet of flowers.

Historic pavilions and alleys

The gently lit pavilions of VDNH, blinking fairy lights, and snow whirling slowly in the air: the landscapes of VDNH are particularly mesmerising in winter, especially when night falls. Check out the amazing, huge dandelions that have 'grown' in the Northern Rose Garden and the Landscape Park.

Snow-covered Landscape Park and Ostakino Park

It is hard to believe but in winter they become even more beautiful, with untouched white pathways, snow sparkling on the tree branches, and squirrels and birds hopping around the glades. This year they have new unusual neighbours: 3D hares (computer-made models) that glow in the dark.

‘City Farmʼ

‘City Farm,ʼ an educational centre for the whole family, invites you to get a real sense of the holiday atmosphere in its cosy, snow-covered barns. Here you can share the wonders of the Russian winter with goats, alpacas, Ayrshire cows and even a reindeer.
