Sergei Korolev and Space Medicine: Free Lectures at VDNH

On 14 August 2021, in honour of the Energia Rocket and Space Corporation's 75th anniversary, the Cosmonautics and Aviation Centre at VDNH will host the Humans and Space free thematic guided tour series and a lecture, Special Design Bureau No. 1: the Smithy of Space. And 15 August will see another free lecture, The Cosmonaut's Heart Is Under Control.

At 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on 14 August, Visitors to the Cosmonautics and Aviation Centre will enjoy the Humans and Space guided tours, which are timed to coincide with the 75th birthday of the S. P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia (also known as Special Design Bureau No. 1 at Research Institute No. 88 and NPO Energia). This company designed and manufactured the very first artificial Earth satellite; the R-7 rocket; the Vostok, Voskhod and Soyuz manned spacecraft; and the Progress cargo carriers. It is also the main designer and operator of the Russian segment at the International Space Station (ISS). The official birthday celebrations are planned for 26 August 2021.

In the meanwhile, the tour guides will tell you about the designers whose work made space travel possible and about the activities of RSC Energia and other enterprises involved in the creation of space technology.

The number of people per tour is no more than 20; the age restriction is 12+. Prior registration is required.

To mark the 75th anniversary of Energia Corporation's formation, the Roboschool centre for youth innovation and creativity will present a free lecture, Design Bureau No. 1: the Smithy of Space, at 4:30 p.m. on 14 August. Alexander Yarovitchuk, the tour guide at the Cosmonautics and Aviation Centre, will talk about the famous chief designer Sergei Pavlovich Korolev and his associates. Korolev headed the bureau for almost 20 years.

The number of participants should not exceed 20; the age restriction is 12+.

Prior registration is required.

Another free lecture, The Cosmonaut's Heart Is Under Control, will take place at the Cosmonautics and Aviation Centre at 2:00 p.m. on 15 August. The presenter is Elena Luchitskaya, PhD in Biology, senior research fellow at the Laboratory of Autonomic Regulation of the Cardiovascular System, Institute of Biomedical Problems, Russian Academy of Sciences.

She will explain how the human heart starts working differently in space, how many hours a day astronauts need to work out in order to return home healthy and what the Traffic Lights system is and how it helps assess astronauts' health.

Prior registration is required. The number of participants should not exceed 40; the age restriction is 10+.

The lecture will conclude the Space Doctor's Notes cycle, part of the Knowledge. VDNH project, which VDNH co-runs with the RAS Institute of Biomedical Problems. The presenters will be revealing the unique features of space medicine once or twice a month on weekends.
